Description

The hut is under renovation and will be closed for the 2022 season.

The mountain hut Koča pri izviru Soče (hut by the Soča River Source) stands just below the source of the most beautiful mountain river Soča, 2 km from where the Vršič road to the Zadnja Trenta Valley branches off. The hut with its surroundings offers plenty of possibilities for an active holiday with demanding hikes and easy walks, or just for relax in an unspoilt nature. From May to October the hut and the Soča river source attract visitors from all over the world.

The hut is accessible by car from Trenta or Vršič Pass, or by foot along the hiking trail Via Alpina. Those who want to exercise or clear their head exploring the panoramic ridges can head to the mountain pasture Planina Zapotok, or towards the peaks of Bavški Grintovec, Trentski Pelc, Sedlo Kanja, Vrh pod Špičkom and mighty Jalovec; it is difficult to name them all.

Also less demanding hikers and families with kids will enjoy the place. There is only an hour walk to the natural sight in gable end of the Zadnja Trenta Valley, where you can admire gorgeous Zapotoški slapovi Waterfalls. They are the most beautiful in May and June when the snow on the peaks is melting and the meadows are covered with a huge variety of medicinal herbs.

There is another trail that needs to be mentioned: the Soča Trail, a nature trail winding through the valley of Trenta along the river Soča. You can set your destination by yourself, walking only to Trenta village or as far as to Bovec. You can get back by bus for Vršič pass, getting off at the roadturn nr. 49 and walking back to the hut for about 10 min.

The hut’s staff tries hard to please all sorts of demands and wishes of mountaineers and other visitors. The menu always offers delicious home-made “štruklji” (traditional Slovene dish) a fragrant apple strudel, “jota” (soup with sauerkraut or turnip), masterly prepared Soča trout (marble trout) and moreover, an indulgent sweet of the day.

History

The first simple hut was rebuilt from a former italian military object on 7 june 1953 by Jesenice mountaineers as honnouring the 60th anniversary of Jesenice mountaineers club. To withstand the growing tourism in the area, the hut was completely renoved and enlarged in 1973. Since 1994 the hut is calling for further investments to improve working conditions and accomodation for numerous visitors.
